CMECS (Coastal and Marine Ecological Classification Standard) is being developed by NOAA ( Version 3 is currently being revised. There is a core steering team overseeing several issue teams.

Some of the bigger issues being discussed include:
1) how to integrate across components
2) how to deal with mixes (i.e. scallops in eelgrass, reef patches in turtle grass)
3) what are appropriate thresholds (i.e. is 50% sand "sandy," or is 75% sand "sandy"?)
4) how to classify water column features
5) how existing coral reef classifications can be used

There will be a CMECS booth and several CMECS posters at the CERF conference in Portland, OR in November.
